Friday, December 25, 2009 will be Christmas Day, a federal holiday. The offices of Vision Payroll will close Christmas Eve, December 24 at 2 pm EST and re-open Monday December 28. Most banks will also be closed in observance of the holiday. Payroll changes and hours must be submitted before the processing deadlines as listed below.

Payrolls dated December 25 will be paid December 24 unless a previous change in schedule has been submitted.

Due to heavy USPS and UPS delivery requirements as well as limited bank hours and staffing, we strongly recommend submitting payrolls during this time as early as practicable. UPS does not ship ground deliveries received on December 24 until December 28 so we do not recommend submitting payrolls on that date. This week’s question is from Mariana, an HR Manager. We are reviewing our payroll processing schedule for 2010. What is the holiday schedule for 2010? Answer: There are two types of holidays: those on which payrolls are processed and those on which payrolls are not processed. In addition, companies should also consider that there is no mail pickup or delivery on federal holidays. UPS may pickup and deliver on certain holidays, but may not pickup or deliver on other days that are not holidays. Consult the UPS website for further information. The schedule for 2010 holidays is as follows:

Thursday, November 26, 2009 will be Thanksgiving Day, a federal holiday. The offices of Vision Payroll will close Thanksgiving Eve, November 25 at 3 pm EST and re-open Friday November 27. Payrolls dated November 26 will be paid November 25 unless a previous change in schedule has been submitted.

There will be no UPS ground delivery on November 26 or November 27, so we strongly recommend submitting payrolls during this time as early as practicable. Wednesday, November 11, 2009 will be Veterans Day, a federal holiday. Although the offices of Vision Payroll will be open and payrolls will be processed, most banks will be closed in observance of the holiday.

Payrolls dated November 11 will be paid November 10 unless a previous change in schedule has been submitted. Payrolls submitted after these processing deadlines will be pushed back until the next available processing day. No changes are required for payrolls dated November 16.

Monday, October 12, 2009 will be Columbus Day, a federal holiday. Although the offices of Vision Payroll will be open and payrolls will be processed, most banks will be closed in observance of the holiday.

Payrolls dated October 12 will be paid October 9 unless a previous change in schedule has been submitted. Payrolls submitted after these processing deadlines will be pushed back until the next available processing day. No changes are required for payrolls dated October 15.

This week’s question comes from Ryan, a small-business owner. We’re going to be closed next Monday for Labor Day. We have some full-time employees and some part-time employees. Do I have to pay employees for holidays? Answer: There is no requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for employers to pay employees for holidays not worked or to pay them a higher rate if they do work. Most employers do pay holiday pay to their full-time employees. Among part-time employees, some employers pay a full day’s pay, some pay according to the employee’s work schedule or other allocation method, and some do not pay part-time employees for holidays. Most public sector and union employees have holiday pay negotiated into their contracts.

Monday, September 7, 2009 will be Labor Day, a federal holiday. The offices of Vision Payroll will close Friday September 4 at 5 pm EDT and re-open Tuesday September 8. Most banks will also be closed in observance of the holiday.

Payrolls dated September 7 will be paid September 4 unless a previous change in schedule has been submitted. Payrolls submitted after these processing deadlines will be pushed back until the next available processing day. No changes are required for payrolls dated September 10.

Saturday, July 4, 2009 will be Independence Day, a federal holiday. Due to bank processing deadlines, the offices of Vision Payroll will be required to transmit ACH files by 2 pm EDT on Friday, July 3, 2009. Payroll received after this time will be processed on the next business day. For all other dates and times, standard processing deadlines will apply.

Monday, February 16, 2009 will be Washington’s Birthday, a federal holiday. Although the offices of Vision Payroll will be open and payrolls will be processed, most banks will be closed in observance of the holiday.

Payrolls dated February 16 will be paid February 13 unless a previous change in schedule has been submitted. Payrolls submitted after these processing deadlines will be pushed back until the next available processing day. No changes are required for payrolls dated February 19.
