Alaska Unemployment Wage Base to Increase to $34,100

The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development has announced an increase in the taxable wage base for 2010. The wage base will increase from $32,700 for 2009 to $34,100 for 2010. AK Taxpayers Receive Extension of Time to File Returns and Pay Taxes

Due to flooding and ice jams in Alaska on April 28, 2009, President Barack Obama declared the following regional educational attendance areas a federal disaster area: Alaska Gateway, Kuspuk, Yukon Flats and Yukon-Koyukuk. Therefore, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced recently that it will waive failure to deposit penalties for employment and excise taxes due after April 27, 2009 and before May 14, 2009 as long as the deposits were made by May 13, 2009. Also, affected taxpayers will have until June 29, 2009 to file most tax returns. Alaska Governor Palin Signs Unemployment Benefits Increase into Law

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin recently signed Senate Bill 120 into law. Under the new law, for new unemployment insurance benefit years beginning after December 31, 2008, the maximum weekly benefit will increase from $248 to $370 and the qualifying amount for unemployment insurance benefits increases from $1000 to $2500. The new law also shifts a portion of the tax responsibility away from the employer to the employees.
