The e-mails attempt to get personal information such as social security numbers, account numbers, and passwords that may be used in identity theft or to gain access to financial accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 6pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000; font-family: Verdana;\">The IRS never sends unsolicited e-mails nor does it request personal or financial information in e-mails. The IRS has set up a <a href=\"mailto:phishing@irs.gov\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">special e-mail address<\/span><\/a> to forward such e-mails using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/privacy\/article\/0,,id=179820,00.html?portlet=5\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;\">instructions<\/span><\/a> provided by the IRS.
